Arvada Police arrest 11-year-old over ‘inappropriate’ stick figure drawing

An 11-year-old Arvada boy was arrested and hauled away in handcuffs for drawing stick figures in school – something his therapist told him to do. The boy’s parents say they comprehend what he did was inappropriate, but are outraged by the way Arvada Police handled the case. The parents do not want their real names employed. “Tim” is becoming treated for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and his therapist told him to draw pictures when got upset, rather than disrupt the class. So that is what he did. Last October, he drew stick figures of himself with a gun, pointed at 4 other stick figures with the words “teacher ought to die.” He felt calmer and was throwing the picture away when the teacher saw it and sent him to the principal’s workplace. The school was aware that the boy was in therapy, determined the drawing was not an actual threat, notified his parents and sent him back to class. His mother, “Jane,” nevertheless, was shocked when Arvada Police showed up at their home later that night. She says she told her son to cooperate and tell the truth, but was horrified when they told her they were arresting him and then handcuffed him and hauled him away in a patrol car. Tim’s mother says she begged police to let her drive her son to the police department and to let her stay with him via the booking procedure but they refused. Instead, they put him in a cell, took his mug shot and fingerprinted him. He thought he was going to jail and would by no means be able to go house once again

We are students from Colegiul National Gheorghe Lazar in Sibiu, Romania, coordinated by Mrs Daniela Arghir, teacher of English, taking part in the Spring Day for Europe 2009 activities as organizers of the illustration of a Romanian classic song. We have chosen the song entitled “Foaie verde lamaita”, which we believe is representative of the Romanian culture, as it brings together the Romanians’ love for their dear ones and the care they take for animals and plants. This is the translation of the song into English: “Green leaf of aloysia, / Aloysia and a marigold. / Come on, sweetheart, / Come on, dear, / Come on, my darling, / My adore! / Gheorghita’s horse is grazing, / Tied to a garden pink. / The garden pink has withered, / Gheorghes horse has left. / Run, Gheorghita, run, / Due to the fact your horse has escaped into the grass.” We first recorded the song – the whole 5a class (form teacher Mrs Corina Ciobota) sang it on the 29th of April 2009, under the supervision of two enthusiastic teachers, Miss Patricia Zanfir (teacher of English) and Mr Paul Miereanu (Music teacher). Then we developed a PowerPoint presentation with the song playing in the playground, three photos taken for the duration of the recording of the song session and pictures drawn by the students in 7a (form teacher Mrs Monica Oancea) supported in their work by their Art teacher, Miss Raluca Filip. In the end Mrs Daniela Arghir turned the .ppt file into a .avi file. Here is our contribution to Spring Day for Europe 2009

Seattle Author and His ‘Time-Traveling’ Son Ask Young Americans to Make a Choice: “To Live a Life of Purpose”

Issaquah, WA (PRWEB) January 6, 2006

Author and photographer Michael S. Class has employed advanced digital photography to place his twelve year-old son, Anthony, in the cockpit of the Spirit of St. Louis with Charles Lindbergh, on the moon with Neil Armstrong, and on Normandy beach on D-Day.

Father and son labored for nearly four years in their garage filled with props from an army surplus shop the garage walls had been covered with blue bed sheets. The result: It looks like Anthony actually did meet Thomas Edison, Jonas Salk, FDR, Lou Gehrig, Charles Lindbergh, and Audie Murphy. The Web website, http://www.MagicPictureFrame.com, displays some of the book’s amazing photographs.

“I wanted to capture the interest of today’s children,” says Class, “by turning American history into a grand time travel adventure — with a moral lesson.” The book, Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame, is recommended for young adults, Grade 6 to Grade 12. Readers say the photographs are “amazing” and marvel at the book’s high quality.

“The storyline is fictional, but the history is authentic,” says Class. Authentic in each detail: even Anthony’s conversations with the individuals of the past are based on items they actually stated, all appropriately footnoted (261 quotes in all). Another 312 footnotes deliver fascinating historical facts and background stories about the events that Anthony witnesses.

“This is American history the way it employed to be taught,” insists Class. “It’s not politically right history. It’s the way it actually was.” Class has received letters from adult readers who said they cried whilst reading Anthony’s ‘eyewitness’ accounts of America’s past: they recognized the realism and truth in Anthony’s story. Some of them were there.

Inspiration comes from what the heroes of America’s past tell Anthony: “The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose, and doing the right thing usually matters.”

The book presents the moral lessons of American history, and prepares kids for the future. The chapter about Lindbergh’s flight is about perseverance. The story of Lou Gehrig is 1 of a virtuous life. The chapter about Thomas Edison is actually about enterprise. The story of Apollo 11 is about wonder, taking risks, and courage. The story of Dr. Jonas Salk and the cure for polio is really about dedicating one’s life to a higher purpose. Anthony’s observation of D-Day and the liberation of the death camps throughout the Holocaust is a testament to the reality of evil and the want to fight it.

Even though recounting his adventures, Anthony discusses the nature of good and evil, correct and wrong, war and peace, what it means to be an American, honor and discipline, success and achievement, courage and destiny, marriage and household, God and purpose. Anthony compares the people and events of the past with the folks and events of his own time. Anthony’s observations prompt serious discussion of timeless moral questions.

“The book challenges young readers to think critically,” says Class, “and to see their contemporary globe in the light of the lessons of the past. The book asks young folks to make a choice: to live a life of purpose.”

“Each and every kid should read this book,” says Anthony, the time-traveler. “My favorite chapter is when I go back in time to meet my wonderful-grandfather at Ellis Island in 1907. I am with him the day he becomes an American. He taught me what being an American actually indicates.” Family photographs were utilized in Anthony’s preferred chapter.

Anthony visits America’s past by stepping through a Magic Picture Frame. But, author Michael Class says the book includes a built-in ‘time machine’ that youngsters can use to see, hear, and encounter the points that Anthony did in the past. The book includes fun “to do” lists containing hundreds of books, movies, music, and locations to check out. This unique approach excites young adults about American history, and assists parents and teachers promote an appreciation for America’s past. Every little thing on the lists is content-rated. The author’s Internet website includes a fun final exam.

Doe Run Goes West to Share Mining, Recycling Story

St. Louis, MO. (PRWEB) August 13, 2008

K-12 educators attending the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation’s teacher workshop heard firsthand about the Missouri lead mining, smelting and recycling business from Matthew Pratt, senior metallurgist for The Doe Run Company’s Buick Resource Recycling Division.

Thirty teachers from Colorado, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Texas attended the 40th annual event, which was held at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. Pratt’s presentation, held July 14, focused on Doe Run’s recycling division in Boss, Mo., historical and present-day lead utilizes and how lead is mined, milled and smelted inside Doe Run’s Missouri operations. Environmental impacts and health issues had been also discussed.

“Thanks to the details shared by Doe Run’s Matthew Pratt, teachers participating in the four-week-long program and their current and future students will have a much much better understanding of the importance of lead in today’s society,” stated Dan Witkowsky, a metallurgical engineer and course coordinator for the education foundation. “Of unique interest to the teachers was how lead – especially from spent automotive batteries – is recycled and can be employed over and over and over once more. It is a achievement story that most of the public has not heard.”

According to Pratt, it’s critical that educators get the full picture about lead so they can share it with their students. BRRD, which opened in 1991, recycles far more than 13.five million lead-acid batteries annually. In addition, BRRD is 1 of the few facilities in the world that accepts and recovers lead from cathode ray tube (CRT) glass, located in numerous computer monitors and television screens.

“Lead tends to get a bad rap, but it is a metal that is important to our everyday lives,” Pratt stated. “Without having it, our cars wouldn’t start, medical services would be impacted, communications would suffer – the globe would alter significantly. As producers, we must do our utmost to protect safety, health and the environment – utilizing the best technology offered – even though supplying this vital metal to shoppers.”

The article says: “Gaming is the optimum delivery method for giving the human mind understanding. Simply because it is 1 on 1 interactive, since it creates precisely the correct challenges at exactly the appropriate time, due to the fact it can readily mix text with sound with pictures with videos, due to the fact it rewards the student appropriately at specifically the appropriate time, simply because it is connected to the sum of all human information, because it is non linear thus presenting understanding in a much more natural way, due to the fact it progresses the student at specifically the correct pace and simply because it is connected to countless other individuals.”

And goes on to explain: “So students wouldn’t just understand a lot more, with better understanding and a lot more quickly. They would also be studying the right points for them and for their life ahead.”

The author of the post is residence computing and video game veteran Bruce Everiss. He explains “For 30 years now I have watched educators fail at attempting to use gaming as a tool in teacher led education. This is simply because game led understanding and teacher led studying are incompatible, you have to choose 1 or the other. And if you are creating an informed choice gaming wins each and every time.”
